We’ve made the crossing…. and smell land – so close

in
Antarctic Expeditions

Well the biggest part is over – we’ve made it across the Drake Passage, in quite good condition – everyone did an excellent job at standing watch, the weather never got too bad, until the last few hours as we entered the Beagle Channel. The weather seems to be playing tricks with us – we are so close, but winds have picked up from the north west making it incredibly challenging to continue, so we have tucked into this anchorage just south of Porto Toro early this morning. We found our friends (and sister vessel) Santa Maria Australis, so now the only two vessels in the world like Ocean Tramp are together in this cozy anchorage.

First impressions – the smell of LAND! There is a humidity in the air and the smell of land, trees, soil, earth, permeates the air. As does the temperature its 11 degrees Celsius. We’ve made it across the most challenging part – we’re within striking distance, so now we just need to wait for the weather to cooperate, but we are almost there.
