The first few days

in
Antarctic Expeditions

After 3 days at sea we have passed 60 degrees south and officially entered Antarctic waters. We have also watched the sea temperature drop from 9.5 degrees C when we left Ushuaia to about 1.6C where we are now. As we left Ushuaia we had good wind conditions of around 25-30 knots and we made good way under sail. While the boat was happy, the crew and passengers onboard each dealt with the Drake in a different way (some better than others). The good news is that we have all made it over the hump and all are starting to happily laugh and converse again. Today we have also started to see icebergs – signs that we are getting closer and closer to our destination. This morning there was 1 or 2 every few hours, but now they have grown more numerous. For many it’s the first time they have seen an iceberg and shouts of glee, delight, and excitement make all of the last few days worth it – and this is just the beginning of the journey! Next post – hopefully we’ll have made it to our first stop.
