Supporting Shackleton History

In addition to taking passengers down south, the Quixote fleet also supports special projects.  Last Southern Summer, the Hans Hansson and her crew started the season with a special trip down to the island of South Georgia.  The South Georgia Heritage Trust brought a specialized technical team to evaluate  the structures at Stromness whaling station. Since the whaling days the station has been abandoned and now poses various safety and environmental hazards.  The team went south to determine the next steps to preserving this whaling station, which is part of the incredible Shackleton story.  Check out this video that tells about the trip and next steps: VIDEO

Stromness, and specifically the Mangers Villa, is where Shackleton, Tom Crean, and Frank Worsley arrived after crossing the island by foot, having arrived on the southern, un-inhabited side after their journey on the James Caird from Elephant Island.  If you haven’t yet read about Shackleton – now is the time – here is a link to some great books.
