Welcome to Martin Ramirez, our Guest Scientist on our upcoming trip to Isla de los Estados.  On our upcoming trip he will be trying to find the female of a spider species that has only been found on Isla de los Estados.  Wish us luck on the hunt for this specific spider!  Below is a short biography of Martin.

Martín J. Ramírez. Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales – CONICET

Martín Ramírez is principal research scientist for the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) in the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales “Bernardino Rivadavia”. He studies the diversity and evolution of spiders, their morphological adaptations to different life styles, and how and when they arrived to their current habitats. In the last years he published studies on the colonization and radiation of ghost spiders in the Juan Fernandez Archipelago in the Pacific, and the long distance dispersal of the intertidal spiders in the rocky shores of the austral continents aided by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Together with his collaborators, Ramírez has discovered and named 175 spider species thus far.
