Ocean Tramp – History in Antarctica

Erin, Passenger

A bit cooler this morning with a light dusting of snow covering the deck.  We spent the morning enjoying a landing at Port Lockroy. This is a former British run base, which is now a museum and houses the famous Penguin Post Office. We toured the facility, posted letters to home, and gazed in wonder at the local penguins. Everyone did a little shopping for souvenirs, as it’s the only place in Antarctica that you can buy anything.

Due to a weather window, we stayed the entire day at our protected Port Lockroy anchor and enjoyed multiple zodiac cruises touring the neighborhood. For lunch, Scottie made the most delicious lemon pumpkin and seafood risotto.

The afternoon was spent either zodiac cruising or relaxing in the saloon. On one of our landings we found Antarctic “graffiti” on a small island with the inscription B.W. Larvik 1911. Due to the regulations of the IAATO and the ethics for Antarctic visitors, it’s very important to leave no trace and take care of this precious and pristine environment.

Cocktail hour was hosted on the aft deck and an impromptu dance party emerged. Afterwards, a delicious pesto pork with potatoes and carrot slaw was served for dinner. This was followed by a screening of Happy Feet.

At 10pm the sun is still out and we are optimistic in viewing a beautiful sunset as it descends to the southeast.
