Ocean Tramp – Final Days

in
Antarctic Expeditions

Blog 19th Dec.
Today was a travel day. We initially planned to venture from Yankee Harbour, the safe nook off Greenwich Island, to the archipelago of tiny Aitcho Islands that lay to the west of us. But high winds and rough seas prompted a change in tack and we instead opted to seek a following wind and head east.
The choice was an excellent one. We were able to make great progress toward our final destination – the airport at King George Island. The favorable winds made it possible to put up our staysail and, for a significant portion of the journey, dispense with the motor altogether, racing along at speeds as high as 9.2 knots.
En route, we were enchanted to see the Bark Europa off our starboard side. The three-masted tall ship is another of the yachts that sails the Antarctic waters.
We finished our sail and anchored safely in Potter Cove, across from the largest Argentinian base in Antarctica – Carlini. Sadly, COVID restrictions made a visit out of the question, but they offered us all assistance should we need it and we beamed over our congratulations on Argentina’s magnificent victory in the World Cup and raised a glass to them.
Reality awaits on Wednesday. But not yet…not yet…
