Blog Christmas Day
Christmas was a little different this year for us aboard the Ocean Tramp, and most definitely white!!!
We woke this morning in the Errera Channel, anchored off of a small island Called Danco. Home to a large Gentoo penguin colony with whom we had an appointment in the way of a shore landing. Its fairly common for most to have a good, wholesome walk on Christmas Day ( normally to help with the digestive process after too much lunch!), but far less common to be surrounded by thousands of penguins as we did so. A story to tell around the lunch table next Christmas perhaps.
After making it back aboard just in time for a light lunch of potato and leek soup, the captain eased the Ocean Tramp through the icebergs littering the channel as we made our way to our anchorage for the night. On the opposite side of Ronge Island which forms the western side of the Errera Channel, is a small rocky outcrop called Islote Adriana where we dropped anchor and put two lines to the shore for security. Here we enjoyed our Christmas meal of roast pork with rhubarb and plum sauce with all the trimmings and followed by the ubiquitous Christmas pudding and rum butter sauce. Delicious!
In true Antarctic fashion, we settled down to watch a movie… Happy Feet. If you’ve not seen it before, put it on your list.
A Merry Christmas indeed aboard the Ocean Tramp.
