Amazing Whales
Lori
A long day at sea, no Zodiac outings, but plenty of beauty to witness. Albatrosses, terns, a funny sighting of a skua and one lone penguin sharing the tip of an iceberg. The constantly changing sky, and nature’s graphics in the black and white of land masses when we see them.
Late in the day we sight a Greenpeace boat in the distance. Turns out there were a few whales in the ‘hood. An excellent display by the local wildlife, with bubble feeding (circling to get the krill into a ball, makes it easy for Whale Takeout). The whales kindly put on a 4-star show, lots of flippers, flukes and seriously cool breaching (Lucy made me add that; “Not JUST breaching, really COOL breaching!!!). You know it is really cool when the whole crew is ALSO up on deck with their own cameras! Heads on a swivel, watching, watching, and great, intense bursts of excitement when we see them do what they do so magnificently.
Oh, and did we mention icebergs??! Some beautiful spotlights of sunshine through the grey and moody skies on a nice selection of ‘bergs along the way.
After dinner, en route to our mooring for the night (in Enterprise Harbour) we came through the Graham Passage to witness a glacier calve nearby. You can tell when that happens…the whole photographic group starts yelling and cheering it on, while thankfully the crew shows more sense, and keeps us out of the way of the resultant wave.
As the photographers retired to their cabins, the hardworking crew goes into the night shift, taking us into the wind to get us to the overnight harbor by about 1:30 a.m.
Day 3, and we are off toward Wilhemina Bay.
PS: To family and friends, if you’re following us along, don’t forget to send comments back – the crew lets us know if anyone sends back commentary, so feel free to add to the conversation!.
