Hoppner Harbor

We are in Hoppner harbour, in the north coast of Isla de los Estdados. The transit through the Lemaire Straight was a bit bumpy, but good. We had lights winds but in the right direction We still some big swells and waves, although we crossed it with following tides, making it a fast passage.

Hoppner Harbor has an outer bay and then an inner bay. The entrance to the inner bay in Hoppner is through a very narrow passage, only 7 meters wide, which has to be timed with the tides given the strong currents entering and leaving the bay –we made it, and now we are in a safe in the cove, moored to trees, rocks and with the anchor, so we should have a quiet night!

The crew is happy, and already the scientists have managed to get good samples. For most of them this is their first time on the Island, and they were very impressed with the magic landscape and high peaks surrounding the bay.

We’ve made some very good videos and photos which will be uploaded once back in civilization. During the transit in the Lemaire we were followed by a big group of around 8 to 12 Peale’s dolphins, and Damian made a very good underwater video of them following us.

Tonight we watched a movie and had a good time enjoying the peace of this place.

Tomorrow will be a busy day of sampling, starting early in the morning.
