Many cruise ships use the evening and night – to transit – from one exciting place to another. Instead, we often use the evening to drop anchor and get to know a place. The shores where we may have landed at 3pm, we now watch at 9pm as the sun starts to send her high latitude glorious rays of pinks and oranges, highlighting the glaciers and summits. We saw the place 6 hours ago, but its transformed by the new light. We remember it differently now because of this light – a warmth, feeling of comfort and familiarity. Its not just a stop along the roadside, but a place we have called home for the night. A place we know we will greet in the morning.
We will spend two nights in Yankee harbor – last night and tonight. Its home to a glacier, a moraine, many many gentoo penguins, a few elephant seals, and a lone chip strap penguin we saw wandering around. Last night after dinner, after dessert, we looked out the window and were graced with an amazing ray – purple – down from the clouds. Something we could only have seen because we called this place home for the night. What will tonight bring!?
