There’s the phrase sleep like a log, but it sure seems “sleep like a seal” should be one too! We’re here in Port Lockroy and there is still some sea ice in the back bay. This means some excellent sleeping / lounging spots for seals – weddell and Leopard! They are sprawled out across the ice – lounging the day away. Often inanimate, but when they do move – its quite a scene. Yesterday, when we went ashore at Jougla Point, a Weddell seal was moving inshore – seemingly trying to find the best spot to lounge. It felt like a worm met a puppy – she would scoot in, then with her back and then her nose almost go in circles, like a dog making his bed. Then she’d seem to have finally made it, then decide to inch forward some more. Three of us watch and she kept us entertained for at least 25 minutes, when at long last, she settled in to her place – and hopefully “slept like a seal.
in the photo she on her back moving back and forth – almost like making a snow angel!
