HANS HANSSON – January 23rd blog, Jenny Varley Part 3

We were unable to visit Port Lockroy which was a disappointment, but a landing at nearby Jougla Point provided yet more opportunities for memory card overloading with Gentoo Penguins and chicks of all sizes from tiny to almost fledged. In the evening we landed at Dorian Bay and visited the ex-BAS hut with a fascinating narrative from a fellow guest who had spent six weeks here thirty years ago. Our return in the zodiacs was a true experience because huge amounts of ice had blown in and there were strong currents for Gerard and Nico to contend with, which they did with great skill, even managing to get us close to a Leopard Seal while negotiating the extremely challenging conditions. Now it is time to start heading north but no doubt with more adventures to come!
