NEW FROM HANS HANSSON

Across the Drake

And we are across the Drake! Hans Hansson and the Crew spent just over 3 days in the Drake Passage – a big thank you to the weather gods – as we were looked upon very favorably! The winds were never higher than 25 knots and seas mostly from astern, which is the direction the boat moves most smoothly in. Overall a fantastic crossing.

The crew – Fede, Eugenio, Daniel, Sarah, and Laura took turns at the helm. With 5 of us and decent weather, the watches were fairly easy! See below for some photos – our FIRST iceberg of the season, seen (and photographed) by Sarah while on watch! Also a photo of chart plotter as we passed Cape Horn. We can’t really say we rounded it, but we definitely sailed past and we waved goodbye to land for the next 3 days.

Hans Hansson is now sitting at Anchor at King George Island (see our position here www.quixote-expeditions.com/news). Passengers arrive Dec 20, so the crew are getting final details ready. We are also saying hi to friends as they come in and out for the cove. Today we said hi to friends (Bob and Annette) from the Polar Citizen Science Collective (www.polarcollective.org) we traded some stories about phytoplankton Collection! They’ve already done some sampling and we are ready to do sampling once we go further south We also said hi to some fellow friends / fellow polar guides! The community in Antarctica is fantastic.

Getting Excited for a GREAT season and FUN Science
