Fjord Land, March 22nd

in
Antarctic Expeditions

Today (march 22nd) was a quiet one, we spent most of the day motoring, after a very successful de-anchorage (our team will be one of the smoothest sailing crews this side of the equator in no time!). The weather was fairly calm but rainy the whole day, which led to a lack of enthusiasm for watching the world go by. That and visibility of only a mile or so.

So with the weather outside not so enticing, and a relative lack of electricity and internet, we took to activities well known for passing the time for generations. One part of the team took to card games, and the occasional card trick, with significant bets at stake (buying a round at the next bar) while the other started a little knitting club. So far one mitten and half a beanie have been produced. For all the knitters were met with teasing about being “grandmothers” at the beginning once the crew saw what was being made enthusiasm rose and orders started coming in. So far the planned stops ahead are to a bar and knitting shop, two of life’s staples.

The most dramatic part of the day was when we were in mostly open waters and the engine cut out. The description that I captured was something to do with air and fuel mix. It was fixed shortly. However, in the mean time it was an exciting lunch adrift in the open with some significant swell – I have to say I missed stabilisers at this point! Coming in to where we are moored now, it’s still raining but we did an excellent job of securing the boat in quite a difficult little place. Surrounded by steep rock walls and no beaches. By the time we were finished everyone was soaked through, however it was worthwhile just to see the waterfalls that surround us on all sides, and a very ancient landscape.

The day was finished with a wonderful hot meal of pasta and a Spanish movie (English subtitles of course) and some fantastic news, that we won’t be moving tomorrow, instead we get a sleep in and have the chance to explore some very exotic country.
