“Today was the best day of my life!”. – Quote heard on deck today as we watched 7 or 8 humpback whales bubble feeding. We sat there on Ocean Tramp watching these amazing creatures dive down together. Humpback whales bubble feed in order to “round up” the krill and then take a huge mouthful. The birds are no dummies and wait around on the surface hoping to get a bite or two themselves. The bubble feeding sequence continued over and over – whales dive. About 30 seconds later a few bubbles appear on the surface. Then the birds move to the bubbles. 15 seconds later one, two, sometimes three humpback whale mouths appear on the surface to eat / filter their krill.
We had a show of whale mouths, bubbles, and tails. We knew we were watching something special. And it was a blue sky, no wind day with small icebergs floating around us. I think our guest was right – potentially the best day of all our lives. It was pretty amazing to be able watch nature at her most impressive.
Our amazing day didn’t start there. In fact it started with an incredible wake up with icebergs around us and minke whales about 600m away surfacing. After apple pancakes, a sail past castle like icebergs, a noisy penguin colony, and then our amazing bubble feeding. What a day!!!
After an full day of sailing we ended up in Foyn harbor moored alongside an old whaling vessel. Most went for a walk over a snow field to get an expansive view of the Gerlache Strait and then a zodiac cruise around Foyn Harbor to watch seals, whale boats and icebergs – not a bad day!!!
