Ocean Tramp in the Drake

All aboard the Ocean Tramp sailed out of the Beagle Channel towards Cape Horn and as twighlight dimmed we spent our first night on board. The winds were light.The plan to keep to the coast and as west as possible. As they grey dawn broke we caught our first glimpse of Cape Horn, 10 nm miles or so off, but its presence was felt by all. A mystical and fearsome place, for most sailors, but the Ocean Tramp was allowed safe passage in 5 – 10 kts from the north.

As expected the wind rose around lunchtime and as dinner was served by the chef, had risen to 40 + kts with 4-5m seas just aft of the beam. Perfect surfing conditions! The crew worked hard all night with as little sail as possible and made good time south. All aboard are enjoying the ride and the experience of the infamous Drake Passage!
