Encounter with a delicate creature
Ocean Tramp – Salman
On this day, we made our way south where it started to feel more and more like Antarctica .. icebergs emerging out of nowhere, deviating and avoiding was the day’s practice as we made our way to Enterprise (the wrecked whaling
ship from 1915). This was an interesting day for me (a pilot) as I was given a chance to captain the vessel and taught the ways of the sea.
We were taken aback by the beauty of Foyn harbor and the grumbling noises from the glaciers all around with continuous snowfall, which was magical.
The highlight of the day would be the end of it where after we anchored side by side to Enterprise we decided to explore the area as we tend to do daily. As we were on our way to pick up Megan and Lucy from an island they were
exploring, they spotted a few humpback whales 500 meters away so we decided to venture towards them. The Zodiac which had Abdulla, Bob, Sarah, Megan, Lucy, Damian and I headed towards where the whales were feeding, being careful to keep our distance so as not to disturb them. Then when all of us were taking a moment to acknowledge being in the presence of these amazing creatures, all of a sudden a beautiful delicate Humpback whale lunges through the water in front of the zodiac, displaying its huge white throat grooves to us, which I have to say was astonishing. And with that it was the perfect end to the day.
