A Tropical Island?

Ocean Tramp – Lori

We awaken to a picture perfect morning. Overnight the crew had anchored us next to the wreck of an old whaling factory ship, The Governor. Antarctic terns perched on its edge, singing us a good morning. Sunshine, 5C, a brilliant summer morning.

Anchor up, and off we went to spend the morning in the calm of Whilemena Bay, watching and listening to the whales. When you’re up on deck, watching for the whales, it gets a bit intense; everyone is on the lookout, concentrating for the signs that whales are in the area. Your head is on a swivel, your eyes intent on the scene.

Next up: Cuverville. Picture in your mind a tropical island. Except instead of palm trees, you have icebergs, and the inhabitants are Gentoo Penguins. Thousands of them. And their babies. We have arrived at a perfect time of the year for getting to see and watch new penguins in the rookeries. Down at the shore you can just sit and watch the penguins having the best time. They line up for their turn at running into the sea, and then it’s just joyful frolic time.
