CITIZEN SCIENCE – New Publications

Guests and Crew contribute data to new publication – FjordPhyto

Since 2017 Guests onboard Ocean Tramp and Hans Hansson have been collecting samples for citizen Science project FjordPhyto.  Guests have towed a plankton net behind their dinghy, they’ve collected water samples, they’ve used a secchi disk, and used a CTD (for temperature and salinity) to get a full picture of the phytoplankton activity in Antarctic waters, specifically in fjords.

Quixote Expeditions ships are not the only ones that participate – a handful of other cruise ships participate and therein lies the power – the power in numbers and data!!!  This latest publication from lead scientist Allison Cusick explains the process and how she has harnessed the power of the multiple vessels down south.

HERE IS THE PUBLICATION in Oceanography:

This is the second big publication thus far to come out of the FjordPhyto Project.  The first was earlier in 2019 – In Polar Biology.  You can read it here.

A HUGE thanks to our passengers who have participated over the years.  Not only have they contributed to science, but hopefully also got a different look at Antarctica, by participating in real research.  Quixote Expeditions continues its participation in FjordPhyto this season!
