We made it to South Georgia!
We left the evening of Feb 23 – weather conditions were looking….. ok for going, so off we went. Onboard we have an amazing team organized by the South Georgia Heritage Trust to do an archeology survey, focusing on the remains from the sealing era. In addition we 6 citizen scientist who are passionate about South Georgia, its history, its wildlife, and ready to give a hand with the dirty work.
The crossing…. It was not a lake. There were definitely side seas. There were some sea sick passengers. As we got closer and the seas calmed toward the end of the 4th day, a few people had to reintroduce themselves having not seen each other for a few days!
It’s a long way, but that’s the only way to South Georgia.
We are now here. We took the morning to readjust to a vessel that is not in constant motion, eat a hearty well earned breakfast, watch the intro movie to South Georgia, and go over how things work while ashore. We also did a triple check of all equipment, as invasive species is one of the biggest threats to south georgia – no only animals, but plant life. In addition to a sweep with a vacuum across velcro, we used a pin to pry out previously hidden bits. Its amazing how they bury. I think we can confidently say we did an incredibly thorough job checking, and rechecking, and recleaning gear prior to our first landing.
And so this afternoon is a bit of a recon and leg stretching afternoon. For joints to move around and the archeologists to get the lay of the land!
