Yesterday we landed at Hydrurga Rocks – a spot that was new to us, so we didn’t know what to expect. What a fantastic place it was. As the first group was landing, the rest of us on board heard one passenger shout “There… over there – There is SOMETHING”. I asked what do you mean something? The response was “Well, its not a penguin and its not a humpback, but I don’t know what it is”. I looked out and it was an orca… and then another and another! Then a humpback – what a great surprise! That’s why in Antarctica, you never know what you will see or get or when you will get it!
Once on the island, there were cormorants, chinstrap penguins, weddell seals, kelp gulls. What a beautiful spot! and it was lightly snowing. Below is a photo of a chinstrap penguin and two chicks!
