Hello to the other six continents and New Zealand,
We’ve spent the past 12 days staying approximately where we are, seeing and learning about sea mammals, seabirds, this unique landscape, and Antarctic history. The Peninsula is incredible, with many gorgeous icebergs in various shades of blue, giving us hours of viewing pleasure on deck, something we just can’t get enough of.
Fortunately, after a couple overcast days, the sun came out to let us spend time sunbathing on the roof of the bridge, and enjoy a dance party on the bow of the boat. That day was great for our scientific endeavors, with no need for gloves or a hat. We’ve been going strong with the sunscreen though, since we’re close to the origin of the Ozone Hole.
Dr. Dr. Michaël: “We have so far, on average, showered three times.” Our morning visit to Port Lockroy (on whatever day it was, hard to keep track) included a museum visit and meeting the four people posted at the British station for the summer season. As a group, we were the highest grossing shopping bunch of the day, and we sent about 60 postcards to eight countries.
One night, for our post-dinner entertainment, we watched March of the Penguins in French with horrible English subtitles. We had, however, immediate commentary from Dr. Dr. Michaël, who begrudgingly answered all audience questions in real-time.
The last two days were very successful in the whale spotting and watching departments. We saw family units of two and three whales, possibly. We even encountered a pod of Orcas. The Dr. Dr. finally broke out his “scientific” hydrophone to record underwater sounds, allowing us a sneak insight into the ethereal sounds of the whales.
Preparations are well underway in time for our New Year’s Eve/ Amber’s Birthday nautical extravaganza tomorrow. Everyone will come out in their best (adventure gear) black and whites.
Hi Dale/Elad and other family and friends. We sort of kind of (not) really miss you all.
1, 2, 3, Quiet. Over and out, Ocean Tramp.
