We woke up yesterday and the cloud cover was higher than the previous day and it continued to lift until the day ended with a starry night! Amazing. We sailed from Foyn Harbor through Wilhelmina bay South to Cuverville Island. Cuverville is an island with a large gentoo penguin colony and stunning views and nearly always icebergs drifing about. We all went ashore and spent the late afternoon / evening soaking in the views. David also went on a search for dead penguin chicks for his research into mercury. Oddly enough, in one of the larger gentoo colonies he found only 2 dead chicks – in other colonies, like yankee harbor we found at least 9. Anyone have any good ideas on why there are so few dead chicks around? where do they go? do skuas take them? if so where? it’s a question we are asking here onboard.
