Do I Need to be A Sailor?

Who joins Ocean Tramp for an Antarctica Trip?

Many people are a bit concerned that a trip on a sailboat is not for them, as they are not sailors. The truth is that we get a few sailors, but most people who join us are here because they want to experience Antarctica differently, not merely as a member of a group called over a loud speaker when its their time to go ashore, but as one among a group of 8-12 friends, with the flexibility and up close view that a smaller vessel allows. I smile now, as at the moment we are on a longer transit and passengers do indeed help with shifts, but under the excellent guidance of Captain Fede. Our guests, many never having sailed, have dodged icebergs, spotted whales and successfully steered the ship. Our passengers can truly go home and say they were a “part of the trip”. Actively involved in Antarctica itself. In standing watch one must be alert for icebergs, but it also focuses one’s sense on the details – the subtle changes of light on the glaciers, discovering a whale in the distance, spotting a seal on an iceberg – details and moments only gained because one stood and watched…. so if you are not a sailor…. we welcome you onboard.
