Long Term Science Collaboration
Otters and Isla de los Estados
Otters have been in the news in Tierra del Fuego and we are pretty excited. Alejandro, one of our guest scientist has been studying them for years, but has been limited to studying them on the main Island of Tierra del Fuego (and a population further up north in Argentina). Last November he came with Ocean Tramp and Quixiote Expeditions to Isla de los Estados and the understanding of Otters down in the Southern Cone rapidly expanded.
This coming week both Ale and Ocean Tramp will be busy. Ale will be in Bahia Blanca to present results in a science symposium. Meanwhile, Ocean Tramp will be back in Isla de los Estados installing more cameras as per Ale’s Instructions. We are pretty excited about this long term project as we have been a part from the start and we get to help check the cameras and watch as Ale’s understanding of the otters here grows each time we go and check the cameras. So far in addition to documenting how many, he’s been able to document interesting behavior!
Watch a short video of what the camera’s captured in the first season – its more than just otters!
We set out on November 7th for another trip to the island – so stay tuned for otter updates!
