Desde el Faro del Fin del Mundo

in
Antarctic Expeditions

English:  We arrived yesterday at San Juan del Salvamento  last bay on the NE side of the island, where the Lighthouse at the End of the World is located, inspiration of Julius Verne for his famous novel.

Fortunately the weather  allowed us to disembark and visit the lighthouse, which are in perfect conservation conditions, maintained by the Associations “friends of the Lighthouse”. The place sis unique, with magnificent views, and a near by seal colony, and seagull nestles also few steps away -the eggs are kind of green with black dots, double the size of a chicken egg.

Inside the lighthouse there are all what you could need in case of emergency -blankets, food, stove, etc.

We anchored at the head of the fjord, where we managed to walk along the beach and visit an old cemetery.

On all the bays visited so far  we experienced at some point the famous “willywaus” sudden and strong winds dropping from above the hills, reaching easily 40 knots of wind.

Tomorrow we plan to start our return, if possible following the east and south side  of the island. We plan to stop in Harberton Ranch on our way to Ushuaia.
