Hans Hansson – Citizen Science

Anne, Passenger

This was a Day at Sea. Underway at 6 am heading from Half Moon Island to Spert and Trinity Islands further south on the peninsula. Rocking and rolling this morning. Had a lovely late breakfast at 8:30, then knitting, relaxing, etc while going out on deck to look around from time to time. Light snow most of the day and windy.

Becky (stewardess and naturalist) briefed us on Citizen Science and covered the projects we might help with: Happy Whale, Globe Cloud and Snow Algae. Our guide, Alex, talked about his work with Polar Collective.

Saw lots of humpback whales, and First Mate, Joann, spent some time turning the boat to stay with a group of them. No one got a good ID photo to send to happy whale but we hope to later. A minke whale was sighted. Saw a black-browed albatross. Then saw “two black spots” on the iceberg ahead that resolved into penguins.

We had delicious squash soup for lunch and spaghetti with meat sauce for dinner.
Our plan for a zodiac tour after dinner has been scrubbed because we are arriving late to our harbor. Instead we will go out at sunrise, 5:30 tomorrow morning.

Coming into Faff Cove, the winds are 60 mph! But the cove is sheltered and we aren’t really feeling it onboard unless we go out on deck. Large icebergs with penguins relaxing on them and high snowy walls all around the cove. Can’t wait for tomorrow!
