Day 7
Halfway through already! Time really flew by when we are having fun. The day began calmly as we sailed toward our next destination. Becky opened the Quixote (gift)shop, offering postcards and Quixote gadgets for those interested.
In the afternoon, we made two landings: one at an Adélie penguin colony and another at the southernmost point of our journey. The Adélie penguin colony was situated in yet another breathtaking environment.
The water was dominated by ice: massive ice floes and snow-covered icebergs stretching as far as the eye could see. The colony consisted of various smaller communities where the penguins had built their nests in groups. We were able to wander around fairly freely and were fortunate to witness a heartwarming sight. The Adélies already had chicks, cozy and warm, hidden under their parents. Occasionally, the penguins would steal and rearrange stones. And other times the chicks were fed, revealing their fluffy little forms in full view. Click—the cameras were making overtime. So adorable!
We ended the day with another short landing, where we were treated to stunning views of enormous rocks and mountains. Interestingly, green moss thrived in this southern region—a rare sight for such a location. Knowing we wouldn’t get much closer to the southern edge of the world, we took a moment to fully absorb the scenery before returning to the Hans Hansson.
