BLOG DAY (9 th Dec )
This morning we departed Paradise Harbor en route to Port Lockroy. We started with overcast and light snow but the sky eventually opened. Port Lockroy was once a major harbor for whaling, but later became a British outpost for atmospheric studies. Today the buildings, including Bransfield House, prior home to the scientists, has been converted to a small but interesting museum with photographs and artifacts of years gone by. It also houses a post office but we were cautioned that mail sent today might take weeks, or even months, to reach its intended destination. Following our visit we travelled a short distance to a penguin colony, watching the Gentoo penguins building nests among the rocky shore. This evening we were honored to have the UKAHT staff, which manages the site, join us for dinner and opened the opportunity to learn more about life at this remote location.
